Upgrade of 11kV power supply and electrical reticulation design for Nelspruit’s Mphmulanga International Fresh Produce Market

Upgrade of 11kV power supply and design of electrical network –

Negotiations were done with City Council Mbombela for the electrical infrastructure upgrade from the Riverside 3 substation along the R37 to the MIFPM site.  A Consumer Substation and an Intake substation were built, and an 11kV supply of approximately 2100m away from the development. An 11 kV overhead line with railway crossing and the cable crossing the R37 by means of horizontal drilling road was constructed. 11kV PILCSWA cables were installed between the Consumer and Council Intake substations. LED street lighting as per SANRAL specifications was installed on the R37.

The design and planning of electrical reticulation –

The market consists of 17 buildings, including the main building of 33 000m².

2 x Coldrooms with offices, ablutions, etc

3 x Offices

1 x Pedestrian bridge with offices

2 x Gatehouses

1 x Taxi rank

1 x Bus rank

2 x Waste management

2 x Ablutions

1 x Pallet storage

2 x Substations

The main building consists of 29 cold room units. The backup power to the main building is via two 400kVA 3phase UPS’s with SCADA interface and two 2,000kVA SDMO generators with synchronization panels. The internal LV reticulation was done using LV Busbars to the Main LV and the Ammonia refrigeration plant electrical distribution boards.  Power factor correction was implemented.

This facility boasts the latest in Ammonia Cooling technology, Forklifts, LED lighting, and well-equipped office space.

Power to the buildings is via nine minisub stations complete with a streetlight, LV and MV sections.  Backup power to the buildings is via six generators placed in optimal positions with UPS’s in each office building.  Fourteen distribution boards manufactured with 3CR12 stainless steel for the borehole pumps and irrigation were also installed, and a VMS board (Variable message sign board) at the entrance.
